The contest is make your own E Drum tutorial video and if its the best you win:

Rush in Rio DVD Concert
*If the winner doesnt want a Rush Video I will get a DVD video of a concert he or she prefers. But who doesnt like Rush! :)

The video is brand new and in its original packaging. The contest is going to start from now until the end of May. I might add some prizes to sweeten the pot. The rules are easy, Upload a YouTube video that does an edrum tutorial. There is no rules on brands or what kind of tutorial video it has to be. It can be funny it can be serious but please make it informative.

Awesome dvd guys watch it all the time, I would enter, but no cam, no kit, and I already have the dvd anyway. lol Good luck to everyone who enters and can't wait to watch some cool informative vids. I think Guiness should automatically be entered for his DM10 review though.

Yes, the March contest has become the April-May contest. We didnt announce the prize last month and I wanted to be clear about that before we ran the contest.

Dan, please enter, you are more than welcome to enter. Tom

Agreed with P.L.R.
The rush in Rio DVD concert is probably the best Rush DVD on the market, I also have the R30 tour and the latest Snakes and Arrows concerts and Rush in Rio is by far the best of them all.
Take care

April-May?

Dammit... I rushed this video to get under the April deadline. It's 10:34pm pst. :P

Not my best creation, but it demonstrates Dynamic Articulation well. Sorta. I deleted the original sound (from the module) from the first portion of this video. (although, you get to hear the accoustics :) )

Very Nice, Guinness is the Leader in the clubhouse. I like that Guinness did a video about the DM10, we need more of those. Thats a nice feature for the DM10, it reminds me of the SPD20 from Roland with the A/B layering of sounds.

BTW: That snare drum I though was a 5.5 x 14 Ludwig Supraphonic sample, its nice that they give you a clue as to what the sample is, thats another plus for the module as far as I am concerned.

The most important characteristic of a tutorial video is clear and concise information about performing a task.

Thanks again for posting, Tom

First, let it be known that I consider myself an expert in the world of "teach but don't do" practice. I have a wonderfully horrific habit of saying one thing or another about what I think someone should do, but I don't actually produce anything of any use myself. I wanted to make sure to point out that shortcoming of my personality before anyone points out that wonderfully obvious thing to me.

Anyhow, I think what would really help any "tutorial" video would be to start the video with a synopsis of what it is that is going to be explained and why. To be honest, I don't have any impression of what "Dynamic Articulation" is, at least as it applies to this video. Next, I think it also help any video to have a set "plan" in place...meaning that you have your lesson decided and ready and you know what you're going to do from one step to another. The main thing that sticks out to me is that there was a lot of "blank" time that was just futzing around on the pads or searching through different voices. If I were a DM10 user, I'd like to know more about what you're doing and why, and how you got there. It seemed like it didn't really get into the "meat" of the info until around the 4:30 minute mark, when you decided on "Car Horn".

Now, please take anything that I say with a grain of salt. Let's remember my first paragraph "disclaimer". Next, I also don't want to sound like a person that only has bad criticism...I mean for it to be constructive. I like you and I think you make some fun videos. I'm only pointing out what I think would make this tutorial video better.

Who knows...maybe one day I will get the balls (and a functioning set up) to make a video as well and have everyone critique the hell out of it!

Oh, and I should also commend you for actually submitting a video! Just by doing that you've already done more than 99% of this site's members.

Tom, please don't be discouraged by that...I think there will be more...it's just a matter of getting people (like me) educated in how to create these little vids and figuring out how to put them up on YouTube.

I agree... and actually the video was originally about 18 minutes long. I first started off by reading the manual section of the what I was was to demonstrate... Dynamic Articulation definition, then filter. But, reading and holding a camera, while doesn't sound hard, was. And I'm not one for multiple takes. Further, who wants to hear me READ the manual. but then again... MOST people don't bother to RTFM, so... :)

Then after I go though the "Car Horn" part, I go to an actual snare set up and demo the Lugwig snare + piccolo. But, 18 fricken minutes is A) too long for youtube, and B) just too frickin long period.

as I said.... I RUSHED this video to get in under the deadline... which I thought was April 30. Once completed I saw that it continued through May. doh.

If you'd like your 7 minutes and 50 seconds back, just send me a written request to:
125 I Don't Care Lane
BlowMeVille, NY
(heavy sarcasm) :P

I appreciate your input, and as I stated, I agree. After doing it, I wanted to make all sorts of changes and redo. Maybe I still will, as the deadline is not until the end of the month. But then again, I'm VERY time poor at the moment, so maybe I'll let this one sit.

I'm itchin to do another "voices" video. So, that may come first.

This is a contest afterall, and at the moment, I'm winning. :) Should I get some competition (and I hope I do), then I'll have to bust out a better version of Dynamic Articulation> Filter. I do think it is a cool feature of the DM10.

I do have one question, have you found a supply of the Yamaha Hex tom mounts? I have to admit I have not and would love to. Great Video

I searched high and low for those things and finally found them at a drum shop three blocks from my house. It is called Fred Pierce Studio Drum Shop (http://fpstudiodrum.com/) and they have them in stock. They had to get me an extra one and it took about a week. They cost $24 each.

I don't normally go into Fred's because they are edrum snobby and don't carry much in electronics. They have been around since I was a little kid and they know their stuff when it comes to antique drums. I went there because I knew they carry a lot of used parts.

I really don't know how much online business they do.

Tough competition!

I know this video doesn't qualify for the contest (because it was made in 2003) but, I thought you guys might get a kick out of it. This is a video that my band "Leverage" did back in 2003. I'm the guy playing the video game. ;)

Crap! I keep trying to reply (on DMDrummer) but getting Error 500 This usually happens 11pm+ pst.

Anyways... Cool video! 2003? Boland studios? Nice! You created this, Phil, yes? Very good considering 7 year old technology, video tools... Cool tune too.

My cousin (guitar player for the band) and I created the video. We used mac computers, G4's at the time, with Final Cut studio and a couple other software tricks. And of course a few props. We use to own a video/audio editing company so, this was a way to get our feet wet you might say.

Kudos to Hellfire / Guinness / DrumLord -

If I can just get some other work projects out of the way - after all, who needs to pay bills or eat? - then perhaps I can actualize a video to the 'tube in July...maybe August...or even September...

I've got a Whole bunch of stuff I need to do first, but will get there eventually...namely:

Revamp kit to include all components

Re-install a lot of software into workstation (I had to reformat, and had over 200 gigs of programs, 3d Models, textures, scenes, projects, etc etc)

Change out the battery in my SPD-8, and the disk drive and battery in my SY-77

Find an easy, inexpensive way to "film" myself with the right equipment

Learn more MIDI - to better integrate the synths

My tutorial will be on custom kit creation...I hope! ;)

The Best Video Tutorial Contest has been won by DrumLord for his video detailing how to retrofit a TP series pad into a acoustic drum shell of the same size. It is simply ingenious and opens up alot of avenues to people who thought they couldnt customize their Yamaha kit and still utilize three zones.

Congratulations Kurt

Please pm me your address to send you your prize.

Congrats Kurt!

I think for the next video tutorial contest, I'm going to make a video that shows how to actually ship something that someone says he's going to ship!!!

Oh, I don't know that I have "anger" issues per se....it's not like I get violent or anything. And yes, I know you sent that shell to Ron...MONTHS ago. So that was not at all directed at you...not in the least. I'm just annoyed with him...have been for quite a long time now, and I'm venting here.
