I can't believe there are no posts in here!!! There has to be a drummer that plays for Jesus/Yahweh/Jehovah/(enter deity here) in the forum.

-Well since I'm first poster... I've gone to church int eh not to distant past (couple years ago) that had a full acoustic set behind a shield and basically a rhythm and blues band...but this was in a Catholic Church.

That kept me from doing the head bob (ZZZZzzzzzzzz) for the eniter service. I had a hard time letting go of the music not being all somber and a downer. I remember saying to my girlfriend "I think this church is too "Fun". I don't like it."

...but I'd be very willing to give it another shot because it was entertaining and engaging.

Hmmm...have to check and see if the chriches in the area are looking for drummers...would be a good warm up before band practice on Sunday afternoon ;)

-COME ON...I KNOW YOU GUYS ARE OUT THERE....SPEAK UP!

Yes! I am a worship drummer. I play a TD10 with pintech/Roland mix pads and a HPD15.
I also play a HPD 15 at several prisons (one tonight).
My A-drums are in our youth room.

I'm a drummer in a Gospel band, and play in my Church too. I have never played at a prison and never plan to, and never will for any reasons :) My rig's too damn expensive and it'll be pretty much suicide to bring it in there.

We're pretty much into Hillsong songs, how about you drum4ever?

E1R, are you sure you were in a Catholic church? As far as I could remember every single Catholic church I visited over the years have always stuck to the singing 'old hymns' and... pretty much everything you don't see at a AOG churches where they taken things to an evolved level since 90's. No offense to the catholic but I've played and heard tonnes to Gospel rocks and pops and streets but I would be surprised if the Catholic churches went the same route!

Do you remember what types of songs they played?

Music. Yeah, a lot of Hillsong, Chris Tomlin, a bit of Todd Agnew, a smattering of this and a touch of that. We have a pretty ecclectic bunch. We even have a premier Southern Gospel group with a Dove award winning Bass singer that does a special occasionally.

As to where I play more, so far church, but prison is catching up fast. 3 - 4 prisons a month currently (in the chapels). Adding 2 more next month. BTW its the safest place you can take your equipment( my brother generally takes his Parker Gold Fly or Taylor 314) but a large rig is out of the question. I need to carry it in in one trip and setup/ tear down fast. The handpad setup is perfect for me. I can play anything from full drums to ethnic percussion and carry it in a snare backpack and a pistol case. I also mix from the drums and the handpad is easy to carry a rhythm one handed for breif spurts to adjust something.

My wife is Catholic and we will go to the Rock-n-Roll service once a month. You ain't lived till you've taken Communion with a back beat. (Which I can't, since I am a heathen)

I swear...it was a Catholic church!

The only reason I went was my little sister (she's 17, younger at that time..BACK OFF VULTURES) was visiting me for a weekend and she promised her father she'd go to church. (Forcing me to attend as well.)

I'm telling you though...it was 4/4 time...there was a nice looking drum kit and shield, good sounding band.. that's what struck me so haywire about the whole thing.

Catholics aren't supposed to have fun at church are they...or did the Pope give a special dispensation for that? (Just teasing fellas ;D)

In a recent Papal Bull entitled "Spiritus Rockus Rollus" the Pope allowed rock music during Mass as long as "it was no more upbeat than the Carpenters or maybe the Association." American Bishops have appealed, trying to at least get up to the Beatles. A schizmatic group is trying for AC/DC.

LOL!!!...could you imagine ... Catholic Church... Easter Sunday.... when the preist begins to walk in from the back.. the intro (with Bells of course) to Hells Bells plays until he reaches the alter...then promtly "Back in Black" begins.. and the priest rips off the robes to show his Catholic School outfit.

-the Gospel would all be sung to the tune of "Whole Lotta Rosie"...

That's too much fun! LOL

-Seriously though I see why a lot of drummers play in church services. You gotta have your chops tight when playing to that audience because you DO NOT want to screw up somebody's prayers or getting in touch with god etc.

Prison drumming is a lot more forgiving. Back to another prison tonight.

I sold my soul to satin a long time ago. In return I was promised a life of debauchery....... I got a raw deal. I'm still waiting............... and waiting........................................... ... and waiting

I sold my soul to leather, denim, silk and lace, not satin. Much more debauchery with silk and lace. Satan, however, is just a complete nuisance. Gets in the way of anything fun and / or profitable.

drum4ever,

Your band plays in prisons? Is this a gospel band? Which prisons?

Yes . Part of the Praise band from my church.

We play chapel services at Eddie Warrior womens prison, Jess Dunn prison, Boley, and we are starting to go to Holdenville. Also we used to go to Tulsa County jail but they won't send us hardly any inmates because the muslims don't go often and it wouldn't be "fair" so they can only attend one service a month. :o

We do Todd Agew, Third Day, Jeremy Camp, Chris Tomlin type stuff and a few older things for the guys who have been in there a looooong time.

Man you guys are a busy band. Its a great thing you guys do.

You have to take some pics of the band and put some demos up. We would love to be a part of it. Tom

I'm a first time poster here.... and yes, I play at my church... I play in a band we put together for the kids service...it's a blast. At church I'm playing a set of TD-10's.. at home I have a TD-20 set. I just got back into playing after about a 10 year hiatus... hard to pick up where I left off, I was way better back in the day when I was playing, but didn't know as much technically as I do now...weird. Anyway, I'm getting better but have a LONG way to go, to be where I want to be. (don't we all). Glad to be a part of the forum here, and hope to put up some stuff soon, I'm building a studio and going to start doing some recording with the gang, and a good buddy of mine who plays acoustic, and another buddy who plays professionally at a show in Branson Missouri for the last 20 years or so. :) peace!
