I just sold my 2nd PM-16.. I had two, one had 7 inputs go bad, so I bought another one. And after playing with it for awhile, decided I needed to update. I am looking at a TD-8, based on bang-for-my-buck. So, anyway, I've downloaded all the PDF manuals for the TD-8, 10, 6V, 12 and 20. Although I would LOVE to get a TD-20, budget must opt for a little less. Anyway, this is my first post, and I hope to be around for a while.

Welcome aboard Ghostman.
Good luck finding a module that will give you the most bang for your playing buck.
Enjoy the forums. :)
Take care

The TD-8 is still a sweet module.
Have you looked into the new TD-9?

The issue I have with the TD-9 is the connector(s).. it's got all the cords going to a DB-25 port (all one continuous cable, like a squid - at least that's my understanding of it after all my research on it.), and 2 extra inputs for 1/4" jacks.. Something just tells me to stay away. I've got my own home-made pads, and I am sure I can plug them in, but I am leery. All my pads are single with 1/4" mono patch cables. the TD-8 (for example) actually has the capability to pair 2 pads for one input - specifically for the bass drums. This is what is sick - I have gone to Roland's site and Downloaded all the manuals - TD-3, TD6V, TD-8, TD-10, TD-12, TD-20, and the TD-9 PDF isn't there yet.. It's slightly tempting, but like I said, I am wary. Also, I still have real cymbals - hi-hat, 2 crashes. I do need a Ride, but I will set up a pad for the ride sound. Eventually, I'll get an electronic ride, and crashes. My original plan was to go TD-12, and plan to get the VH-12, and slowly upgrade all my cymbals to elec counterparts. However, I am getting back into this, and am probably not going pro :D So, I figure keeping my costs down. maybe as the years go by, I'll slowly get to a full electric kit, but my thought getting into e-drums originally was, it's an electric kit, WHY DO I WANT IT TO SOUND LIKE AN ACOUSTICAL KIT? So, all my sounds were very non- acoustic. Sure, bass and snare, but very electric sounding. and I used sound effects (star trek door, light saber, metal pipe, drill, explosions, etc) for accents more than the cymbals.. I still plan to use a keyboard and sampler for MIDI sounds, triggered via module, and I might get an additional Alesis Trigger I/O, or Roland TMC-6 as the kit grows.. Boy, that turned into a longer post than expected!!

I really understand that desire to break out of the acoustic sounding drum habit. There is no reason you can't make anything a rhthym instrument.
And if that is you goal, then standard modules aren't for you.
I am looking at the 2box and the new DTXreme for a sample based module.
I would love the new expansion card for the TD-20 to have sampling, but I am not holding my breath.

Well, the EMAX I bought used from a 'rich kid' (LOL) who had ALL the goodies.. The keyboard came with a NICE carrying case, and about 100 sound disks. Plus, the band I was in at the time (Fiction 8*) used a lot of samples for percussion. I got used to the lazy man's sound library - all there, no work to actually sample or do anything. Now, I want both, good/decent sounding acoustical from time to time, and synth percussion sounds.
* they are still doing stuff, check 'em out if you like what I call 'Dance Industrial'. They are Industrial, but I always thought the music was kinda slow for my personal taste. But that's what you get when a metalhead drummer goes into an Industrial band. Although now, post Fiction 8, I'm a huge fan of KMFDM. It was actually at one of our shows, in between bands when the newest KMFDM album NIHIL was being played over the house sound system, and I was like 'Who is this? This F**kin kicks ASS'. That was in like, '96? Anyway, KMFDM to this day, baby! And I love Ministry, they've got great synth percussion sounds..

Fiction 8 sounds almost EBM. Very poppy.
I dig KMFDM and Ministry too. I am also a big Skinny Puppy fan.
I still think the DTXtreme or the new 2Box modules would be best for you. They have a huge library of natural sounding drums, but you can upload any sample you want. I am strongly thinking of picking one of them up.

As far as I know, the 2Box is not in production yet. And I can't find any speculation as to when it will be.

Did you find Fiction 8 and listen then? what tracks?
I haven't listened to a lot of Skinny puppy, though I have some. I need more ministry..
