So,
I am delving into the world of SysEx. Here's a quick review:
I got a FREE Korg 01/w keyboard from a friend. It's got a few broken keys due to a fall, but they physically are impaired. They work , but a few need to be pulled back up. But as a MIDI sound source, it is fantastic (and the price is right). It is the base model, no floppy drive. Also, it's from 1992 or so, and parts (like memory cards) are pricey and rare. Enter MIDI - USB cable and SysEx. I can dump and load these files (and I found a yahoo group that hosts some) and get new sounds and all sorts of stuff.
Then, I figured out the IO uses SysEx, and I can back it up as well.
Then, I realized that the TD series and VExpressions are basically SysEx editors and file transfers.
So, now I am wondering if SysEx is an open standard, or if each module has its own message formatting, and if there are any converters. I think it'd be interesting to see if I can convert TD dumps / VExpression bits to load on the Korg. I am thinking it is a long shot - since I can think of parameters the Korg has that the TD series desn't, and vice-versa, but I figured there were some better SysEx experts out there.
Seems to me, that the General MIDI is a standard that crosses platforms, but again, I am not sure.
Anyway, just thought I'd get some brains working out there.
