Hi all.
Well, I just had to try it, I couldn't resist.
I plugged in my Pintech AX14 snare into the snare port of the DTXtreme III and holly cow, the thing works, it actually works flawlessly. This snare drum has given me nothing but grief since the day I bought it, I've plugged it into the following modules.... DTXtreme IIs, DTXpress III and DTXpress IV.
I've always come close to getting it to work properly but always had issues, either double triggering or sensitivity issues, no happy medium.
Well, I just plugged it into the DTXtreme III and here's all the tweaking I did to make it work flawlessly......
I upped the gain from the standard 30 to 35 in the module, THAT'S IT, it's set as a TP-120sd/100 pad type and it works!!!!!!!
Yamaha must have put in some circuitry that levels off incoming signals (kinda like normalize?).
My AX14 snare is now full of life and very responsive, the best I've ever seen this drum since buying almost 2 years ago. YAY!!!!!
I've recorded a sample of my playing the AX14 on the DTXtreme III, I'm using preset kit #2 Birch Custom Absolute.
No double triggering and good sensitivity, at first, I do various rolls from the outer edge near the rim and run the rolls across the center of the drum and to the opposite rim, I do this a few times, hitting harder each time. Then I just mess around, this will give you an idea as to what this mesh head drum sounds like on the III.
File attached.
Take care

Thats very nice, sounded great and seemed very sensitive. Its nice when you can reclaim something you thought was never going to operate properly. Now you have a great new snare drum. I am happy you got it to work with the xtreme3. ;D

Now we need to get a Raper circuit on it to use a second zone and it will be perfect.

Hi Tom.
Yes, it was sensitive and also the DTXtreme III having a compressor, the center hotspot was calmed down to the point where it didn't even exist.
I've put my Yamaha snare back on now, I'm trying to keep this DTXtreme III Standard kit stock for as long as I can hold out (hopefully till my summer holidays in mid July), then I'll have the time to dedicate a week to incorporating the III kit into my WTF-2 kit. By then I should know enough about the module to feel comfortable about having it on my big kit. Right now there are too many things I can't figure out what to do on the III and the manual is not being any help. Hopefully soon, the Yamaha guys will start posting Quick Step guides.
I can't figure out how to stack 2 or more voices to one drum (snare) and have them trigger by velocity. Seems I can't issue any new note the voice I want, the manual is very poor in this description and they use midi channel 11 in their example, well, that's really swell if I want to play a piano in alternate mode, but I bought a drum kit not a piano, why couldn't they show how to layer a snare as an example instead. They went a totally different way to do things in the III, layering is easy on the IIs and the IV, but so far is a pain in the butt on the III.
Hopefully some of the Yamaha techs can answer this one soon, I posted about it on the DTX forums, nothing yet, funny, all those guys were readily available just before the III was available, where are they now?
Take care
