View Full Version : Product thoughts - Mini module?

So I've been brainstorming, thinking about how I'm going to do my entire set up (it'll be here...I know it will...soon...I swear it will ;)). And I'm thinking it's very possible that I may end up having more pads than I will have inputs available on my TD-10. Sure, I plan on splitting the crash inputs so I can put 2 cymbals into one input, and the same with the aux. input, and that may get my cymbals accommodated. But I'd still like to have just a few more inputs for percussion voices, and unfortunately I have no money to go get another module. So it made me wonder if there would be any benefit to the module manufacturers to make a 'mini-module', something like only 4-6 inputs and basic L/R main outs. I'm just thinking for people like me that want just a little bit more, but not to the extent of a 2nd TD-20, -12, or DTXtreme, and just want to spend a couple hundred bucks instead of a thousand. Think it would be a worth-while product for them to look into?

Isn't that what the TMC-6 is?

And, I am still planning on buying a 'real' module, and my Alesis IO will be my 'expander'...

Or do you want built in sounds? You could always buy a 'lesser' module like a TD-6 or equivalent..

My question is if I have a DTXIII or TD-20, can I map the TMC-6 / IO to sounds outside of the assigned kit loaded. IE, does the 'kit' loaded only service the inputs, or can you add additional MIDI assignments from an outside source??

David, I sed to have a Roland SPD20 and found it to be a great addition to my kit. It has 4 external trigger inputs and 8 pads that can be layered and alot of great percussion sounds and all for about $620.00 street price. I liked the unit alot and it has alot of firepower when you scale down for gigging also. Tom

Yeah, my thought process was for built-in sounds/voices.
I was just looking around and it seems like the TD-3 typically goes for a couple hundred on ebay. Again, it was just brainstorming. I was thinking perhaps something that's even a little smaller than the TD-3 or -6 (with regards to # of inputs), that doesn't have bells/whistles like pre-loaded songs/sequences, but has the ability to really dial in the sound a user wants, like the advanced COSM functions of a TD-20.
Ideally I'd think it would be great if it were like a true expansion box that could communicate with a 2nd module, but I don't see that happening...at least not inexpensively. I don't know if it can do the function you're talking about...anyone got a thought on that?

Hey Tom - actually I was just thinking about those as well...from what I understand they have some pretty good sounds loaded in 'em. Might be a little more firepower than I was thinking...I guess I was thinking of a scaled-down TD-3, with TD-20 COSM editing.
Odds are likely it wouldn't be worth Roland or Yamaha's time.
