Hi, all. I'm a newbie here. Been playing drums off and on since I was a wee lass in 1979. I've never played in many bands because I suffer from low self-esteem and am convinced I am a horrible drummer!
HOWEVER! I've been jonesin' to buy an electronic drum kit since I played some crappy "tabletop-like" Simmons drums in the 80's, Space Muffins in the mid-90's and the older Roland kits. Yesterday I cruised over to the Pintech website and was impressed by the construction of the pads and Tiger Bill's review of them.
I'm not working at the moment (just got diagnosed with diabetes. YUCK!) and so any purchase of e-drums will have to wait another year, I think. I'm considering three different kits: Roland's TD-3, Yamaha DTXpress (the one that's the same price as the Roland TD-3) and a Pintech.
Any advice? Sorry this post was so dang long.

Spike,
Good luck with the diabetes, if you can get your sugars under control, you can do pretty well...
I started a bit over a year with a TD-3KW. I hadn't played drums before, played guitar. I really got into the drums and seem to have much more of a knack for them. I wanted to add another trigger so I got a Pintech Dingbat so I could add another sound, cowbell, tambourine, another cymbal. I got it from Brian (hope Drums), who's GREAT ! Then I added the mesh pads, toms and snare, a bit later added the mesh 8"kick. Today my first Pintech cymbal arrived, a 14 " crash. Looks great, plays great. I'll eventually get the ride and hi-hat from Brian too. I have a TD-12 on order too. Lastly I'll get a rack and then I'll sell off the whole TD3 as a unit.
Never having really played acoustic drums I can't really compare them. Be careful, these things are addicting. They are just a blast to play. If I don't play them for a while every day, I feel that something's missing.
The Roland was fine to start with but you soon find yourself wanting more and better gear.
All my upgrades will eventually get me a very nice kit. I'm very happy with my Pintech gear. Brian and Pintech are both excellent to deal with. Great tech support, info, help, advice.
Good luck, watch those A1Cs and hopefully you can get ahold of some e-drums real soon.

Hey Spike -
My opinion is that it'll be more economical to go with the Pintech pads/hardware and find a module used. If you go with Pintech pads then you'll probably want to get a Roland module...from what I understand they work with Roland modules better than Yamahas. You may be able to find a lot of TD-6 modules for good prices as they have been discontinued (replaced by the TD-9).
Welcome to the board, good luck, and have fun.
I'm going to have a donut.
(was that mean? I'm kind of a **** sometimes)

Any advice?
Yeah, buy from me and save a ton of money!! ;D J/K, but seriously welcome to the forum. With Pintech you will save yourself quite a bit of money. I always suggest the TD8 module. It has some great features, good sounds and are only about $550 (not that, that's chump change, but it's much cheaper than the other modules with that same features!)

Another shameless plug......
I came into a little extra money so I'll be completing my upgraded kit very soon. I'll be selling off my TD-3KW Kit. Shipping might be an expense for you, I'm not sure. The TD-3 is a great starter kit.
But seriously, used kits, used modules, piecemeal used pads or modules, close outs or demos, even some new stuff, there are a lot of ways to save $$$ so you can get a kit together. This and other forums have a lot of sharp people who can make suggestions, they have some classifieds too.
Good luck getting something sooner rather than later.

My brother was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes several months ago. He has been very good about what he eats and drinks ( he cut out the soda), exercised a bit, lost some weight and he's almost off the meds now. Hopefully you can do this too.
Good luck with your diabetes.
