Internet flame war got a bit literal

Man loses everything

By Nick Farrell: Friday 27 July 2007, 10:38

A VIRGINIAN navy man got so miffed during an email flame war with the owner of a haunted house museum that he drove 1,300 miles from Virginia to Waco, Texas and set fire to his trailer.
As the decorated Fire Controlman, 2nd Class Petty Officer Russell Tavares drove towards Waco he posted photos online showing the welcome signs at several states' borders.

Tavares, 27, was sentenced to seven years in prison after admitting he started the blaze.

His victim John Anderson, 59, suffered smoke inhalation while trying to put out the fire that caused $50,000 in damage to his trailer and computer equipment.

It all started back in 2005, when Anderson joined a picture-sharing Web site and posted his artwork and political views. Tavares got angry when Anderson called him a nerd and posted a digitally altered photo making Tavares look like a skinny boy holding a gun and a laptop under a "Revenge of the Nerds" sign.

Tavares tracked Anderson down, took leave from his post as a weapons systems operator at the AEGIS Training and Readiness Center in Dahlgren and started driving. His plan, apparently, was to point a shotgun at Anderson and shoot his computer.

Instead, he threw a piece of gasoline-soaked plastic foam into the back of Anderson's mobile home and lit a flare.

Tavares was discharged from the Navy and claims to have lost everything because of the feud. Apparently even when he had his day in court he could not let the matter go. He was caught taking pictures of Anderson on his mobile phone. The court ordered the phone to be wiped.

More here (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070726/ap_on_hi_te/internet_feud;_ylt=AkbkUuGeVIknQ2OZZggRFAqs0NUE).

Nothing to be amazed at all, but I've started flame wars before... and to think someone might take it so seriously just leaves me stunned.
Reminds me how dangerously stupid some people can get over something so..... miniscule. I guess he saw the movie Hot Fuzz and got encouraged from it. Never will I be involved in a flame war from now.. :)

Kevin,

Probably the best thing to do is to be civil all the time. Some people make negative, nasty statements because they feel untouchable from a safe distance (similiar to road rage in their vehicles). Your story just proved some people can be pushed to the edge and take their response to the next step. Good story. Wes

Thanks Tom for the welcome.

I came over because I appreciated your viewpoint that it should be more about playing/discussing/creating edrums, rather than a hatefest about what particular brand a drummer did or didn't purchase. I see Jack, Debbie and Kevin are here too.

Looks good so far. Wes

Whuffies to Kevin and Wes,

Kevin for admitting to starting flame wars (Kevin you dont see the type), and Wild Wes for a knack for creating the right kit setup and best use of Drum racking. :)

I have until now, namely in IT related forums :)
It's just inevitable to have flame wars starting every now and then, simply because of those damn trolls and fanbois.
Funny thing is sometimes these guys don't realise that they're indeed a fanboi/biased about a particular brand they love/own or just provoking others and argueing for the sake of doing it!
