Yes it ain't my DIY kit but a DIY kit nonetheless. What started out as a DIY project ended up as a third party made yet beaut' kit. The snare, tom and bass drum is custom made by Tom(Knipedrums) ; and the cymbals are installed with Jman's Stealth trigger kit. My role included installing the guts and...yeah.

So behold.. after 3 years of joing this forum... I have finally got off my ass and aimed a camera at my kit for showcase. Luckily no one was around to take my camera-shy self with the kit so I remain unknown. I'll give my portrait as a reference point. http://www.vdrums.com/images/smile.gif

I'll upload the pics in a link for fear that some may have their braind overloaded for sudden exposure to my kit's awesomeness. Sorry, had a long day.. can't get enough of myself http://www.vdrums.com/images/smile.gif

Goes without saying - thousand thanks to Tom and Jman for helping me build these awesome Do-It-Themselves kit.. and thanks especially to Tom who listened to all my desires and the last minute changes...
Now I can take this kit just in time to a worship conference tomorrow and show off my kit... worship coming first that is http://www.vdrums.com/images/smile.gif

Lovely kit. You should be taking the kit not just the pics to the conference.

Wow Kevin, the kit looks awesome.
I love the size of the shells and the authentic looking cymbals, they look acoustic, how is the kit playing, triggers well and feel good? I know you've been working on this a long time, so Congrats on a job well done, something to be quite proud of! :)
Take care

is the worship conference to worship you and your kit? :D
-1 wuffie for allowing fingerprints to be seen on the glossy finish! hahaha....
And yes, the real question is how well does it all play?!

I'm also curious about the Pintech heads...do they feel durable or do you feel like you're about to put a stick right through 'em?

The Pintech heads are actually of a good quality but they are single ply thus making them bouncy, this is not so bad for the toms but I prefer a Roland 2 ply mesh head on the snare.
I played on Pintech pads with their mesh heads for 2 years and even after that amount of time, the mesh heads seem to show no wear so I'd have to say they are of decent quality.
Take care

I had some wiring problems since I was using a jack with a pcb board. Ironically I'm using the Roland basket on all them pads and the PS is just weird... It triggers and plays fine but once I diddle around the rim and come back to the centre of the head, the rim sound partly still plays. I tried pressing the centre with my thumb and that resolved the issue. Still I won't be able to do that everytime I go for a rimshot... couldn't find out what was causing it, so I just turned it off.... Although PS is one of many reason I wanted TD-20 module, I think I can live without it. Rim zones play out fine. I thought I would've had to tap with a bit of strength but a little tap triggers the rim just fine.

Pintech head is great, just a bit too bouncy. I like the black look and you don't get see any stick marks :)

I actually enjoy the Pintech heads alot, I used to like the Billy Blast black 2 ply heads because they were silent but they arent available any longer.

I have never had trouble with the ps on my kit, its been a year since I had a TD20 (Will be utilizing one again fairly soon) I will look into it when I get my new one.

Kevin, did you wire it to the Roland wiring scheme thats floating around? Thats the one I always use, I have never tried the pcb but I might have to now. Talk to you soon, T:D

Yep, all of them that I could find. Which rules out wiring but I just couldn't figure out what I could've done wrong with the piezos and/or the cones. Later I'm going to buy a traditional jack and piezos with quick-connects so I can test all I want without soldering.

WARNING: (itsy-bitsy rant in progress)

OMG! I keep hearing at vDrums that one of the main reasons Roland makes the best module is because of it's PS capability. Now, to achieve that real acoustic drum sound, you also have to upgrade the card and use a Vex kit too. Welcome to CrazyWorld! Sorry to stray off topic and usually I don't care whether someone wants to play Roland or Yamaha. To each his own, but I've found it amusing over the years that many Roland owners preach PS as the key to that real drumming feel with electronic drums.

We now return this program to it's regularly scheduled broadcast.

You could say it's either a common misconception or that simply PS really is a big deal to them. The x-stick/rimshot velocity changeover on the rim zone will make do so I don't think I'll need PS on my snare anymore.

But I used various positions on my real snare exclusively back when I used an acoustic kit when doing musicals... You'll have to understand why these PS huggers really do make a big deal out of them :) Anyway to some extent PS is a big goody but not something to die for, definitely.

Just so you know you forgot to write any praising feedback about my kit. Just Kidding... :) But really.

I did say "itsy, bitsy rant". Kinda hard to switch gears and say something nice in the same post. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-laughing001.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org)

- Even though they increase the cost and don't improve the sound of edrums, I'm a big fan of the visual aspect of double-headed/rimmed drums. Big plus for that.

- The brass cymbals look very sharp on this kit. Any thoughts to switching the hi-hat to brass too? (Pssst! I see Yamaha in these photos)

- I think a chrome/stainless steel rack would make the black drums pop even more, but that's just me.

Very nice upgrade Kevin. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-score010.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org)

lol that'll do :)

Yep, the double sides are totally worth the additional price..

I may be able to change that VH-11 cymbal with a real hi-hat cymbal. I just need to replicate the thing in the middle of the VH-11 cymbal that presses the controller, and fit that into the hi-hat cymbal.

I'd prefer chrome instead of black gloss anyday. The dust and finger prints are a total put-offs. Not to mention how fragile and weak the clamps and t-clamps are. I'm not even sure how the telescoping leg gets held by two pieces of platic semi rings with a quick-release cam levers, especially with all that cymbal, pad andn hardware weight. It's just a nightmare waiting to happen during a gig or a big concert. I mean a rack collapsing would be the lamest way to ruin a performance.

I'm thinking about either a customized Gib rack or better yet that sturdy-looking-possibly-overkill Yamaha DTXtreme IIIs rack if only I could buy it seperately. That thing suely looks like it'll take worries away about any possible rack malfunctions :)
