Since I currently own both, I thought I'd give my two cents on each (I know, nobody asked). I used the RHH-135 with a DTXtreme II/III modules and the VH-11 with a TD-10exp module. I'd probably not be able to detect any of these characteristics, if I didn't have both in my possession. Keep in mind, these are my observations/opinions and both are excellent hi-hats to own/play. Don't even get me started on the FD-7/CY-5 combo I purchased prior to the VH-11. Hahahahahahaha

- Both are about the same diameter and depth.
- The RHH-135 has a slightly lower register stick impact sound (thud instead of a click).
- The VH-11 seems to be a slightly stiffer pad than the RHH-135 pad.
- The RHH-135 seems to have a slightly softer impact rubber on top.
- The VH-11 has a separate larger controller which the controller cable plugs into.
- The RHH-135 has a separate smaller controller block, but both cables plug into the pad.
- Both have excellent response and feel.
- The VH-11 costs about $100-$150 more than the RHH-135 (ouch).

Hope this helps anyone sitting on the fence waiting to purchase one or the other. Just make sure it works with your specific module. WW

Scott,

We're like a Democrat who just switched to Republican Party or a Republican that just switched to the Democratic Party. We both have a new perspective on what is likeable.

Only the entry fee into the Roland Party cost a lot more to join than the Yamaha Party - hahahahahahahahahahaha

Simply an analogy. To assign a specific party to either brand would create a monster thread, I'd just soon not see happen. Once I finish my kit, it will have a Yamaha and a Roland module. Best of both worlds. WW

Hi Wes, great comparison between the two hihats, I had a VH-12 when I had my TD-20 kit and everything you said I have to agree with. The surface of the Roland hihat/cymbals is a different rubber than those of the Yamaha's. Seems the Roland ones have a little more plastic in the rubber maybe, they feel a little more plastic. Both hihats work very well however.
And yes, the price difference between the two brands is as you described "ouch" LOL :)
Take care

Don't take my comments too seriously...:D...I was just wanting to have some fun (lighthearted) with your analogy and this thread....:)

I didn't Scott. I just try to stay away from serious religious/political discussions in a drum forum, as I've seen some get way out of hand at other sites.

Afterall, we're here to talk about drums, drumming, drummers and each other - hahahaha. It's still all good Scott. WW

Here's additional info that I'd ask for that may help the fence dwellers a little more:

- Both are about the same diameter and depth.
Any idea what those dimensions are, approximately?

- The RHH-135 has a slightly lower register stick impact sound (thud instead of a click).
So by "lower" you mean the frequency range of the impact sound...not necessarily the perceived "loudness"? Does the "click" sound of the Roland make it seem to you like it's louder, acoustically?

- The VH-11 seems to be a slightly stiffer pad than the RHH-135 pad.
In your opinion, is that a good thing or a bad thing? Does the stiffness (or lack of for the Yam) give a feel one way or the other of a real hihat?

- The RHH-135 seems to have a slightly softer impact rubber on top.
Would you say it would be similar to the difference between the soft side and hard side of a Real Feel practice pad? Or is the difference not that extreme?

- The VH-11 has a separate larger controller which the controller cable plugs into.
- The RHH-135 has a separate smaller controller block, but both cables plug into the pad.
Does the controller have any impact on your overall opinion of each? Is there a convenience factor of one or the other? Does the controller affect the overall look/aesthetic?

- Both have excellent response and feel.
Does one or the other have a better/more realistic feel from just the foot/pedal action?

I realize many of these are completely subjective, but I am curious none the less.

For you fence sitters. If you own a newer Roland module, buy the VH-11. If you own a newer Yamaha module, buy the RHH-135.

Tom, please delete all my rep points so I don't need to answer each of his questions. Thanks. WW
