Here's link to a recording I did comparing the Beech Pre kit w/ a Beech User kit I created....let me know what you think...I'm not playing anything hard here, just a basic groove....really just wanted to hear the difference between the two...one after the other....the 1st part is the Pre kit the latter part is my User kit....and I played it on my Yamanator:D
...for the recording I used an Olympus LS-10 pocket recorder...:)

I think you have done a great job with that kit. Your user kit sounds much better to my ears. I can realy hear the stick and beater attack on the heads. Nice resonance too. Yamaha did a better job giving us good pre kits to start with on this module IMO. Your demo shows that with some user tweaking they can sound even better though. I can see you are getting very good at creating your own kits. Again, Great editing job! Alvis :)

Tried to download - took 10 minutes - then told me I needed a codec to play - bummer. Damn my operator error issue. hahahaha
However, my master plan is under way. I sell DTX III module to Scott > he tweaks all the pre-kits > a new module comes out > Scott needs it badly > I buy back my DTX III at half price. Devious, but that's how I roll - hahahaha. WW

Wes, Windows media player didn`t like that file for me. Maybe try a different player. Quick Time player worked great though.
Scott, I think Wes means if you ever do sell that module back to him he wants it like new. I`d do a factory reset for him so he can start with a clean slate without having your nicely tweaked user kits getting in his way. hahaha

It's just wrong to mess with a master plan. Somebody (who shall be nameless and currently residing in Texas) has been scratched off my christmas list and removed from my nightly prayers.

Oh Man I would not wanna be that guy.... errr.... Now that I think about it you`re right Wes. It is wrong to mess with a master plan no matter how ingenious and deveious. Goes against the master plan code of ethics. Sorry man.
Scott, If you do ever sell your module back to Wes I would leave your user kits in tact. And the more you build the better. After all if Wes don`t like them he has the experience to do a factory reset if he needs to. In fact I would give him a usb drive with an ALLDATA file on it. Just in case he did a factory reset by accident he could load it all back without any problem. Alvis
So for Christmas will you tell me what module you used for the DTXperience jam song this month? hehe. :)

Scott, I listened to your example between preset and user kit of the Beech kit.
Yep, the user kit sounds so much better, more definition and more presence I think.
Wes... stop creating master plans!
Alvis... stop messing with master plans when they just gotta happen! LOL :D
Wes... the idea of buying back the III is not a master plan, it's business.
Alvis... business is cruel and unforgiving, don't mess with business either! LOL :)
That'll be $5.00 for the words of wisdom please (hey, I go cheap) LOL :D
Take care

Thanks Alvis and Jack for the comments/compliments...this kit sounds even better live....I've a got a MapleBeech kit I created (using the NY70's pre kit) that also sounds really nice...the snare in that kit just sings....also a Maple Custom ABS kit that is really nice...I may try to record these also...:D

Thanks Tom...yea I'm really having alot of fun with this module and I also like this snare & kit alot...this module is a great piece of equipment...with just loads of editing ability/functionality to it...alot more than I'm currently using right now...but I'm learning it and to me that's half the fun of getting something new!!

That kit sounds fantastic.... After I convince Jack to hold on to a couple of things for me and I build a yammi kit.... and after summer of course because tis the the season I don't have time, well for anything..... I may ask to use that. It really sounds good. You've forced me into new appreciation for the yammi stuff.
Thanks Scott, my wifes gonna love you.... she always wanted a kit in her formal living room :D

Quick Time or Real Player works well with it.....the recording is a wav. file....I'll record some in Mp3 format also....

I am joining the "I like the customized kit better" camp as well.
I customize everything on my Rollie myself. The stock kits generally SUCK, and VEX packs are not worth the money to me. Good for you.:)

I am thouroughly enjoying this module (Xtreme III)...it has so much editing capability built into it....and I am having alot of fun learning how to build kits myself and the drum sounds I have been able to create, I have been very happy with....when I owned a roland module (td-10exp.) I purchased all of the VEX packs for it....to my ears they were OK (some better than others)...I liked the Steve Gadd kit....and a few others (I. Paice, Journey, Yamaha Oak, come to mind..), but alot of them I grew tired of rather quickly...

Is that a little Led Zep "The Rover" intro that I hear there? ;) :D
It's surprising what a difference there is between the two. I've always had the impression that a user really need to dive deep into the editing functions to make a noticeable difference...you must be a very diligent user! You should also be proud of yourself, your version sounds SO much better than the "stock" kit.
In all honesty, and this is just a personal opinion so please don't take it as criticism or negativity...I agree the snare sounds great and I really like the sound of the ride...I'd like the kick to open up a little more and the toms to open up a lot more. They just sound kind of choked off in comparison to the snare, particularly the lower pitched toms. Again, just my opinion.

Does the DTX III let you adjust head muffling and whatnot like a Roland does?

None taken...and Yes you win the grand prize!!!!...lol...haha...yea it was a little bit (beginning) of "The Rover"...good ears!....
With regards to the toms and bass...they do sound much better than what was captured on the recording (new recorder...still learning it)..there's alot of resonance that just doesn't get captured on this recording...and I also think this kit (pre-kit) is based on a studio kit sound, so there is some dryness to the sound that carries over to my user kit. I am planning on recording some more kits and posting them soon..as I have created approx. 10-12 kits so far....and I am still tweaking them some as I learn more about this module....Also I'll say this, the pre-kit does sound quite good, again I don't think the recording captured it the way it sounds live..with regards to the cymbals, no editing was done to their sound...

cheapthrill, The DTX III does not have a "muffle" button. I have never owned a Roland module but i`m guessing it does have such a button. All it realy does is reduce or increase the decay of the sample IMO. On the Yamaha modules you would just reduce the decay from a screen in the module. Maybe not as drummer friendly but the effect is the same.

Cheapthrill, the UI on the Yamaha module is different than the Roland module....to me it's set up more like a sound engineer/person would use (multi EQ adj. such as low, mid, high freq. adj. for each drum, gain, attack, decay, etc..).....I don't know if it's more or less drummer friendly (depends on the persons understanding on sound parameters)....I do know this...after using it for a little over a month I really like its' UI (maybe even a little better than my former roland module UI)....although some of the reason may be because I actually have been reading/learning the manual for this module, so I can better know its functions/capabilities....
....The UI on Roland modules is very good (IMO) and maybe in some aspects a little easier to understand on the surface (i.e., muffling, shell depth, coated, clear, pinstripe heads, etc...), however IMO to really get the most out of your module, you need to learn the module (i.e.,read the manual)...so whichever brand is used....my take is...read the manual, learn the system and then enjoy the creating your own kits!!!:)

Agreed with Scott that the III's UI is more like that a sound engineer would feel right at home with, personally, I find it a little confusing at times since I'm not a sound engineer and there's a lot of the effects in the module I haven't the slightest idea what they do, even the manual is no help unless your into sound enough to know what a flanger, chorus, etc is.
I know reverb and compression, the rest I just take stabs in the dark.
In this respect, the UI on the TD-20 I had was much more user friendly and easier to use than that of the III, but I think in the hands of someone who knows how to shape sound and know what they are hearing, they can make the III sounds pretty darned sweet. :)
Take care

Hi Scott.
Excellent, man oh man, how I wish I still had the ear to be able to distinguish all these very small subtleties when editing kits, but I can't, normally I have to do drastic changes to hear the differences, don't know if I've never had the ear for it or just hearing damage from industrial noise. I just setup my user kits as best as I can hear them and they sound good to me. :)
Take care
