View Full Version : Yet another Roland price increase

Fudgicicals. You guys heard about the Roland price increase? I'm literally shocked.

Maybe because it's the economy, maybe bacause they need more for more R&D, maybe it's because a lot of people still buy their overpriced products and they thought huh, maybe we'll go nuts and increase more? I don't care. For something that wouldn't even cost them $30 in materials(probably) they are putting price tags a dozen times of that on it.

Not that it'll do anything but I'll do my part in boycotting Roland and buy Yamaha products from now on. I've been slowly itching to play those rubber pads anyway. If not for that then atleast to send my money elsewhere.

This is widely debatable I know, but to me these latest movements toward price increases by Roland suggests one thing and one thing only - they are stuffed fat full of pride of their products that they think they should increase the prices just because they can and some poor customer around the corner will think hey, they look nice and sleek and costs a fortune and all my pension fund, they must be ****ing great? Here have my soul as well just for making it trustworthy.

And here I was thinking Roland may have learned a lesson and might decrease the prices back to what they were last year. Wellll. Roland you can take your dodgy racks and oh-so-silver cymbals and pads and cosm and shove it up your ass cause you ain't fooling me. Go die, go to hell to rot, die again and then some more.

End rant :) Oh and hi guys, long time no see/talk.

See what happens after you turn 22 Kevin - hahahaha.

Probably the biggest reason I never played Roland (until recently) was due to how much more they were charging than Yamaha. There's no doubt that Roland builds a very nice product, but I'm still amazed at the prices they command (used TD-20 modules are selling for more than an entire DTXtreme III standard kit). Add $400-$500 for the expansion card and you still need to purchase the Vex kits for better sounds.

Amazing, but drummers are still buying them up. WW

I agree that Roland is way too expensive for my taste. Heck, $100 is a lot for me right now, but their top of the line kit is $7,000!!!!:eek:

What would $7,000 buy you if you were buying Yamaha. Hey Dan, I just thought of this: What could $7,000 buy a customer from Dauz drums? I mean what kind of set-up would that translate into. You can pick and choose the products.

I think it would be neat to see what can be had for $7000 from other edrum companies.

I just looked on Musician's Friend's website for Yamaha. For $7000 from Yamaha, you can purchase two (yes two) DTXTREME IIISP's (full kits) and still have $1000 to play with. Heck, you could then add a Yamaha DTXpress IV Set on top of all of that. That would make for one heck of a edrum kit.

Just a thought.

Phil,
I dont think I would even suggest anyone spend that kind of money on a electronic drum set... These days you can get so much for a great price.... Im on the same page as you about paying alot for this stuff.... I could sell someone a custom great feeling 30 pad set with a computer and software ... all required hardware.... plus I will come set it up personally anywhere in the USA... Then I will buy you dinner.....

Dan, If I ever have $7000 to spend on a kit, I now know where to buy it from.:D

I whipped up this little pic to drive the point home. I decided to keep it edrum related.

Excellent chart Phil.
Yeah, if I was a Roland fan or just loyal customer, I think I'd be writing them right about now with a screenshot of your chart with the caption.... "ARE YOU FREAKING NUTS?"
Take care

I have been moving away from getting on Roland about issues related to price because I dont want to appear as anti Roland but I think this thread illustrates why so many turn away and shop elsewhere.

I thought it was outrageous when I ordered a screw for a pad I was repairing and they charged me $6.00 for a 6mm screw that i ultimately went to Home Depot and paid $1.19 for a bag of 20 or so.

I kind have settled on my view that if you have people to purchase it at that price then go for it. I wouldnt have the nerve to charge that for a kit but I know in my business there are tons of people charging $7,000 for a custom acoustic kit. I wouldnt but thats me I guess, maybe because I started building stuff because I couldnt afford the custom stuff, I understand what people go through that want a piece of quality gear at a reasonable price.

I sincerely hope that Yamaha doesnt get that way with pricing, but I fear its more about what the market will bear and the perception that they are the best.

Phil, great job on the illustration, Tom

Thanks guys. That illustration is nothing more than showing a price comparison. I think it is important to state that. I don't feel that this chart is anti Roland in any way. I think Roland makes really good gear, I just can't afford their stuff. Just to let you guy know, I did post this pic over at Vdrums.com. The main reaction to it was a lot different.

I expected the module feature comparison to pop up, but I didn't expect to read that my chart was "misleading". Admittedly, it may have been my fault for not coming out and stressing that it was a price chart. I'm learning more and more that people sometime perceived things not being said as meaning something that was not intended.

Phil, I didnt mean that the chart was anti Roland, I think it illustrates a very good point about price and where they are in the market.

I do echo Dan that you are a brave soul :)

I also think that Roland will drop their prices significantly next year and in the coming years. My humble opinion.

I think its inevitable in a niche markets where new products are constantly coming out and grabbing their share of the market. I think when the DM10 and the 2box module enter the market as an ala carte item it will help other manufacturers.

...No need to defend yourself Phil, I'm glad you made that comparison. I dare say any person that feels like going out of their way just to say your chart is misleading is only saying that because they are, without doubt Roland fanbois. That chart is, if anything an accurate comparison that puts things into perspective.
Is TD-20SX worth two DTX IIISP? No, end of story. Some people over at Roland and vdrums needs to get their friggin heads out of their asses and stop acting like mindless drones that think money flows from taps.

Woopsie looks like I had some steam left over :)

I didn't think you did.:) I just stated that because I could see how it might be taken that way from somebody who really likes Roland gear.

I'm glad you guys feel that way, but to me the brave souls are over seas fighting a war. What I do is not brave. It is just me being me.

Phil, I think there are degrees of bravery. For example, somewhere between making a post that leaves yourself open to criticism and putting your life on the line for what you believe in is the brave man who says to his wife " I just spent $7000.00 on an electronic drum kit". lol

Wes, Mesh? I thought positional sensing was all that mattered with Edrums. haha
