Yeah, he was amazing.
I saw him live at the Ottawa National Art Center but I can't remember the year, it was between 1977 and 1979. I had went with my father, as I told him, Buddy can do more with one hand than most drummers can do with two! LOL :)
I'm glad I got to see him at least once! :)
Take care

Lucky you!...my Dad saw him at least once that I know of...many years ago when he was still a teenager (the 40's)..as a matter of fact it was my Dad who first introduced me to Buddy's playing...he had a Buddy Rich vs. Gene Krupa drum battle album which I now have, that I used to listen to as a kid...:)...and yes Buddy had an amazing hand speed (esp. that left hand)!

I also went to see him around 1979. I recall that I was impressed with his skills, but not with the music. As my dad used to say about my music preferences, "it sounds all the same to me". I'm sure he and the band were great, but I went away unimpressed. Youth! hahahaha.

I never had the plaeasure of seeing Buddy Rich live. I have the opposite perspective as Wes but I agree with his premise. I was raised by my Grandparents and my Grandfather adored music specifically Big Band of the 40's and swing music. I was very aware of the drummers from that era and the music from that era. I enjoy it to this day. I have seen the Gleen Miller Orchestra 3 times and Maynard Ferguson 4 times in my life and each time solidified my adoration for that style of music. Nowadays I love Brian setzer Orchestra, Cherry poppin Daddies and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy keeping the spirit of that great music alive. So now for me Bernie Dressel is someone to watch. But I too find it hard to appreciate great drummers that play in genres of music that I dont enjoy so consequently I dont get exposed to Virgil Donatti and Terry Bozzio because I dont like the genre that they play in.
Scott, Thanks for the video it was awesome, he was a spectacle to behold I do wish that I could have seen him live. I also find that songs I dont enjoy normally I love when done in Big Band style, if you every get the chance check out Maynard Ferguson playing Over the Rainbow blows me away each and every time I listen to it. :)
