If you guys were going to go midi out to a program like BFD or the Toontracks stuff, what would you use as the controller? I haven't decided on a set of pads yet, but if I don't get a package deal with a brain I'm wondering if there is a cheaper way to send the midi controller info to a computer so I could buy more pads.

I guess that would depend on what pads you plan on using. If you are wanting the use Yamaha 3 zone pads, I would go with a compatible Yamaha module. If you are wanting dual zone Roland mesh pads, I would go with a Roland module. If you plan on DIY'ing your pads (and trying to do this on the cheap) I would go with an Alesis Trigger I/O or DM10 (could use a D4 or DM5 but no variable hi-hat control with those). Just my two cents.

Well I want to go test play the Yamaha stuff, but I really like the feel of mesh so I'm considering a Pintech set as well. If I get the Yamaha, then it just makes sense to use their module. But with Pintech? Choices, choices.

Just an FYI...the Yamaha DTXtreme III module works also with Roland mesh pads and also Pintech I believe...and yes I was able to get both zones on a roland mesh pad to trigger with the III module....one of the reasons I would recommend this module is cost and also Yamaha e-cymbals...IMO they're the best out there and considerably cheaper than Roland...:)

Pintech drum pads are available in single/dual zoned and I've used them with the DTXtreme II/III and TD-10 modules. All have worked with the Pintech pads, but I found for me the Roland module to work the easiest with the Pintech pads. I'll be the first to admit that I know nothing about midi, or enjoy reading manuals or spend lots of time experimenting with modules settings. All I can tell you is as a "plug-n-play" drummer, I get a much better rim trigger on my Pintech drums with the Roland module. IMO, if you desire mesh and rubber cymbals, Pintech mesh and Yamaha cymbals will give you the most bang for your buck. Just one persons story, not the end all to your quest.

Good luck with your build ScutMonkey. WW
