Assuming one would play (or practice) on aDrums eventually, does anyone go ahead and setup the placement of thier eDrums to try and match common spacing between pads?
If so, besides measuring an aKit, what are some guidelines?
I think it would be easy to get trapped (muscle memory) into a tightly spaced eKit where pads are nice and compact to each other, only to then make it very hard to play a normal aKit.

well, you'll find that there are plenty of things that are going to feel different from A to E, not just the spacing of the toms. Unless you use electronic pads that are the same size as A toms, then you're going to have to try to measure it out and put them in the same location as they would be if they were A's. However, keep in mind that shell depth is also a limit that you have to deal with on A kits so even if the spacing in between is correct, sometimes the angles might be different from A to E...particularly when it comes to toms on/around the kick(s). My opinion is to try to not think of them the same way. They are two similar, but different instruments. If the electronic kit is only meant as a tool for keeping in practice, then remember that's all it is - a practice tool. But it can certainly be more than that.
And then, to be completely honest, it's not that difficult making the switch from A to E or E to A. You get used to it quickly.

Some drummers like the compactness of e-kits, due to space restrictions. Then there are some like me that never intend to play an a-kit again, but enjoy playing on fullsize diy e-drums.
The bottom line is play what you can and enjoy the ride. WW

If you are going to space them apart to mimic the acoustic kit, measure the center of each drum and then set up the e kit accordingly. It wont be as off as you might think. I also measure the height of the playing surface and try to kep them the same. Just incase I ever go back to acousics, and sometimes I truly wonder if I will go back. lol Good Luck with the setup.

What you'll find is that every kit you'll ever sit at and play will have a different setup/spacing than what yours will have. Every individual drummer will have their kit setup to their particular liking, so setting up your e-kit with pseudo a-kit spacing won't necessarily help you with muscle memory to play the a-kit. That is unless you have an a-kit that you have set up to your particular liking and would like to emulate.
